The AI Layoff Trend

Coinbase announced a 14% workforce reduction as it reshapes its operations around a crypto market downturn and rising AI-driven productivity, with plans to simplify its structure, reduce coordination overhead, and enable smaller teams to deliver more output.
Meanwhile, new findings from Gartner show that companies cutting staff to support AI investments are not seeing improved returns, with research indicating that layoffs alone do not correlate with stronger ROI outcomes.
The data suggests that while organizations like Coinbase are adjusting headcount in response to AI and market pressures, long-term value is more closely tied to how effectively AI is integrated with human work rather than used as a direct substitute for it.
