The debate of whether organizations “need” a Chief AI Officer has gone back and forth for a while. At this point, though, it’s less theoretical than it used to be. The role is already showing up, and how it works really depends on the organization and what it’s trying to accomplish.
In higher education, the rise of CAIOs has become hard to miss. A lot of them come from academic or research leadership and are focusing on work around strategy, ethics, and mission.
In this case, the debate shouldn’t center on titles. If the structure works, it works.
But what often gets overlooked is where the heavy lifting still sits.
The work that actually determines what AI can do at scale (data, identity, vendors, security, integrations, platforms, etc.) still lands with the CIO. You can have other leaders in the mix, but when CIO leadership in those areas isn’t visible, progress won’t wait. It moves on, and IT is left accountable for the results.
